Witron expands Ultra-Fresh system at Delhaize

Delhaize Le Lion / De Leeuw, a food retailer in Belgium, is expanding its automated flow-through fresh food logistics center in Zellik (Distribution Centre B3) together with the general contractor Witron Logistik + Informatik GmbH.

Since the end of 2013, the facility has been supplying over 800 stores with a range of over 900 different fresh and ultra-fresh products in the temperature ranges +2 degrees Celsius and +4 degrees Celsius. Once the expansion goes into operation, planned for mid-2022, the output will increase by more than 40% on peak days. The expansion that has now been commissioned shows that Delhaize is convinced of the cost-effectiveness, flexibility, ergonomics and availability of the solution.

The current expansion was already planned in the original logistics concept. To this end, three additional modules are being implemented into the existing Witron ATS (Automated Tote System) solution during ongoing operations. These include 100,000 additional container storage locations (271,000 in total), 12 storage and retrieval machines (32 in total) and 24 container stackers/destackers (71 in total). A further 12 sequence buffers, 8 vertical lifters, 4 transverse transfer cars, 2 dolly loading stations and wrapping and labeling machines.

ATS has significantly simplified and accelerated whole container handling throughout the entire material flow. A key advantage of the technology is that the EP containers of different sizes frequently used in the fresh produce sector can be automatically stored, picked in line with store requirements and stacked on shipping dollies with minimal personnel requirements.
