Österreichische Post AG expands parcel logistics center in Kalsdorf

Austrian Post's largest and most modern parcel logistics center in Kalsdorf near Graz only just started operations in July 2020. Now it is being expanded.

Inside the facility is not only the longest conveyor system with a total length of around 2 kilometers, but also one of the largest sorters in Austria. To date, around 130,000 parcels have been distributed here every day. Last but not least, P. According to press reports, Austrian Post set a new parcel record in 2021 with 184 million parcels. This corresponds to an increase of eleven percent.

The first expansion stage was already designed for a sorting capacity of 13,500 parcels per hour. The expansion stage, which was already taken into account in the planning phase, now enables a boost in performance to up to 20,000 parcels per hour as well as further sorting targets for fine distribution. Following an intensive planning phase in 2019, during which various system concepts were discussed and simulated together with Austrian Post, the decision was made in favor of the expandable matrix chute concept for the strategic Kalsdorf site.

The centerpiece here is a Crossorter 1200 HC crossbelt sorter. Two infeed groups, via which the sorter is filled, in conjunction with the matrix chutes, ensure multiple use of the sorter carriers. Put simply: After each infeed group, a large proportion of the parcels are discharged for time-critical WAB sorting and brought together again in a common chute (matrix chute). A second crossbelt sorter of the same type, which can be reached via four crossover routes, is used for regional delivery sorting. The two infeed areas themselves consist of 29 infeed lines, which are fed by delivery by truck, small vehicle or roll container. The consignments are distributed to a total of 242 target chutes, around half of which are designed as buffer terminals with a large capacity. A bulky goods traffic circle with three infeed points and a post-processing area complete the process optimization at the site.

The online trend continues

The original plan was for the matrix chutes to be successively retrofitted as required in order to be able to react flexibly to future parcel volumes. However, the ongoing online trend has now led to the location being finalized in one fell swoop, making it a flagship within the Austrian Post network. The high-performance site will play a key role in the future, particularly during the peak season, with daily volumes of around 300,000 consignments. The official opening of the final expansion is planned for fall 2022 and should therefore be available in time for the upcoming Christmas season.
