Pocket sorter
Book wholesaler Libri relies on TGW pocket sorter
The book wholesaler Libri and BoD (Books on Demand) rely on TGW's OmniPick pocket sorter. The German bookseller benefits from fast throughput times for express orders: On average, only 20 minutes pass from the production of the books to their unloading into the order bin. The go-live of the highly automated system in Bad Hersfeld, Hesse, is already planned for fall 2021.
Libri (Latin for books) has been active in the book trade for over 90 years. BoD (Books on Demand), the European market leader in digital book publishing according to the company, is a sister company of the media service provider. The print-on-demand specialist is a production and distribution service provider for publishers and self-publishing authors. The books are produced by BoD using digital printing - from a print run of one. In contrast to traditional print runs, the process is very flexible, but poses new challenges for intralogistics.
"With our new Plureos print-on-demand and logistics center, we are creating a unique offering for the book market in Europe," report Yogesh Torani, Managing Director of BoD, and Jörg Paul, COO of Libri, "OmniPick will help us to automatically process individual books so that we can produce and deliver books to bookstores overnight in future. There will no longer be any difference in delivery times between books in stock and newly printed books."
The printed books are picked up at the end of the production line and transferred to a loading station, which automatically fills the hanging pockets with one book each. In the next step, the pockets with the BoD books are placed in the dynamic buffer, which has space for 19,000 pockets. A presort buffer first groups them into sorting runs before the final sequencing is carried out in the matrix sorter. The books are then transported to the packing workstations and repacked in Libri shipping tubs.
