Medical supplies for the fight against corona

First passenger plane full of air freight lands in Frankfurt

Loaded with around 30 tons of cargo, a Lufthansa passenger plane landed in Frankfurt on 25 March. In addition to the cargo compartments of the Airbus A330, the cabin was also loaded, including the stowage compartments above the seats. On board the aircraft with the registration number D-AIKI were various high-value items, mainly from the medical sector, including masks and other protective equipment. The necessary permits for the flight were issued in excellent cooperation with the foreign ministries and embassies of the People's Republic of China and the Federal Republic of Germany.

Lufthansa Cargo is doing everything it can to strengthen supply security by air. Around half of the goods are normally transported in cargo aircraft, the other half in the bellies of passenger aircraft. Valuable airfreight capacities are lacking due to the widespread cancellation of passenger flights. The Lufthansa Group and Lufthansa Cargo are therefore examining the possibility of operating further flights for the exclusive transportation of goods with passenger aircraft.

Logistics and air freight are particularly important in emergency and crisis situations. In addition to urgent spare parts and machine parts, sensitive pharmaceuticals and fresh goods are primarily transported intercontinentally by air. A Boeing 777F cargo aircraft has a standard load capacity of 103 tons.
