Witron implements automated deep-freeze logistics center

Witron is already building the sixth fully automated frozen food logistics center for Spanish food retailer Mercadona. The facility in Guadix, southern Spain, is scheduled to go into operation at the beginning of 2021.

From there, Mercadona will supply 224 stores in Andalusia. With its mechanized logistics systems, Witron will be responsible for the storage and picking of frozen products for more than 80% of all 1,630 Mercadona stores in Spain.

Seven fully automated COM machines pick up to 46,000 retail units daily from a range of 550 items onto pallets in line with store requirements. A five-aisle pallet high-bay warehouse with 7,000 storage locations and a fourteen-aisle tray AS/RS with 62,300 storage locations are located upstream. The mechanical elements manufactured by Witron guarantee high availability. These were designed for 24/7 continuous operation at deep-freeze temperatures. The material flow processes are optimized by a Witron warehouse management system.
