Klinkhammer builds pallet silo high-bay warehouse for Erlus

Erlus AG, a manufacturer of roof ceramics and chimney systems, wants automated intralogistics. Klinkhammer was awarded a planning contract for this and is now implementing the automation as general contractor, from incoming goods to the high-bay pallet warehouse and pallet picking through to dispatch.

Production takes place at three locations in Germany, with Neufahrn being one of the largest roof tile production sites in Europe. At peak times, up to 100 trucks leave the yard every day. Several roof tiles have received the coveted iF Design Award. Previously, roof tiles and roof ceramic molded parts were manually picked onto pallets with forklifts, packed and temporarily stored or loaded directly at the Neufahrn site. Due to the high proportion of manual work, these processes took a lot of time and there were waiting times for truck loading. By automating the processes, Erlus is now setting an example in terms of speed, availability and service quality.

The automated high-bay pallet warehouse is designed as a silo structure, is 30 meters high and holds 8,176 pallet spaces. The four-aisle high-bay warehouse is connected to the incoming goods, outgoing goods, replenishment and goods-to-person picking areas using pallet conveyor technology. It has a single-deep structure. As the products are fragile, can break easily and must be transported with minimal vibration, the pallets are recorded using cameras to increase quality assurance in the incoming goods area. Products on non-conveyable one-way pallets are automatically transferred to Euro pallets for transportation on the conveyor system. The high-bay pallet warehouse is controlled via the KlinkWARE warehouse management system.

Some industry-specific features are implemented in the software. The dimensions, weight of an article and its packaging units are managed in the warehouse management system, as are ABC classifications according to turnover frequency, stacking classes, order quantities for pallet calculation, packaging specifications, removal sequences or special processes. With this intralogistics solution, Erlus is a pioneer in its industry and is one of the first to use automated storage and picking technology for roof ceramics. The project is scheduled for completion in the 4th quarter of 2023. "The planned high-bay warehouse will improve working conditions for our employees, increase loading efficiency and make loading quieter than before," says Erlus CEO Peter Hoffmann.
