Jungheinrich automates for Liebherr in Ehingen

Liebherr-Werke Ehingen GmbH is building a new central spare parts warehouse with Jungheinrich at its headquarters in Ehingen, Baden-Württemberg. As one of the world's leading manufacturers of mobile cranes, Liebherr intends to handle its global spare parts supply from here from June 2023.

At the heart of the logistics solution, which Jungheinrich is supplying from a single source, is a 6-aisle automated high-bay pallet warehouse (HBW) in silo design with 18,000 storage locations - including the roof and wall cladding. The dimensions are impressive at 80 meters long, 75 meters wide and 30 meters high. There is also a 2-aisle, triple-deep small parts shuttle warehouse (SKL) with storage spaces for a total of 40,000 containers.

With these two warehouse types, Liebherr's spare parts supply achieves maximum space utilization with a high handling capacity at the same time. The company intends to set new standards in terms of quality, functionality and safety and ensure consistently high availability of its equipment around the globe.

The product range of the Liebherr plant in Ehingen includes state-of-the-art telescopic and lattice boom cranes of various sizes on mobile and crawler chassis: The spectrum ranges from all-terrain mobile cranes with 35 tons to gigantic crawler cranes with a lifting capacity of 3,000 tons.

The system solution that Jungheinrich developed as general contractor for the Liebherr plant in Ehingen includes, in addition to the high-bay and low-bay racking systems, the latest conveyor technology for containers and pallets - including control and visualization - six storage and retrieval machines for pallets from the Jungheinrich subsidiary MIAS. With two load handling devices each in the comprehensively automated processes, these ensure speed when storing and retrieving Liebherr spare parts and guarantee problem-free operation around the clock.

The Jungheinrich Warehouse Management System (WMS) controls not only the automated system, but also all processes in the surrounding manual warehouse areas in dialog with Liebherr's ERP system. All functions and solutions are precisely tailored to Liebherr's requirements. This includes the pre-picking of containers in multi-order mode with pick-by/put-to-light with subsequent consolidation in the course of pallet picking. In addition, pick-and-pack picking into shipping cartons is carried out at the same location as container pre-picking and at another workstation where picking is carried out from both pallets and containers into shipping cartons. The goal: maximum efficiency with maximum transparency of all intralogistics tasks in the central spare parts supply by the Liebherr plant in Ehingen.

"The logistics solution that we developed for Liebherr is characterized above all by its high level of flexibility. It can be easily expanded and is therefore already equipped for future growth in the spare parts business. Jungheinrich offers planning, project management and construction of the system from a single source," says Jungheinrich project manager Robert Schad.
