BMW tests exoskeletons from German Bionic in workshop operation

It is not only BMW vehicles that are to become increasingly networked, intelligent and safe. At the BMW branch in Darmstadt, the signs are also pointing to progress. In cooperation with the University of Siegen, exoskeletons from german Bionic are now being tested in the workshop.

The use of exoskeletons is intended to relieve the physical strain on BMW employees at the Darmstadt branch during the wheel and tire season. Exoskeletons are human-machine systems that support or even amplify the wearer's movements. Exoskeletons thus make physical work easier and reduce strain-related illnesses and accidents at work.

Relief of up to 25 kg
These power suits from robotics specialist German Bionic are being used in the test phase. According to the company, it is the first European manufacturer to develop and mass-produce exoskeletons for use in industrial environments. The German Bionic Cray X model is worn like a backpack and can be individually adjusted to almost any body size thanks to its adjustable straps.

At work, it adapts effortlessly to the employee's movements and reinforces them without intruding into their working environment. The Cray X was designed for manual handling of goods and tools and relieves the lower back by up to 25 kg when lifting from unergonomic positions.

Parallel laboratory test
In parallel, one of the exoskeletons is being tested under real conditions as part of a laboratory trial in collaboration with the University of Siegen in order to objectively examine the effect of the active exoskeleton on the physical strain on employees.
