"No DB vehicle will run on diesel in 2050"
DB wants to do without diesel
Deutsche Bahn is doing away with conventional diesel in order to become a climate-neutral company by 2050. To this end, the company is examining various options for alternative drives and fuels.
The advanced TrainLab and the Sylt Shuttle, for example, use two variants of eco-diesel that are produced entirely or partially from processed organic residual and waste materials: The advanced TrainLab is already running on an eco-diesel that reduces carbon dioxide emissions by 90 percent. From October, the Sylt Shuttle between Westerland and Niebüll will be running on climate-friendly eco-diesel on a trial basis.
Prof. Sabina Jeschke, DB Board Member for Digitalization and Technology: "Rail will only become climate-neutral if we say goodbye to diesel. We need to radically reduce the consumption of fossil fuels and bring it down to zero. By 2050, DB will no longer run a single vehicle on diesel. With an annual consumption of more than 250 million liters of diesel, this is a challenge - and we are tackling it. In order for alternative fuels and drives to be used on rail, on the road and in the air, the transport sector and the industry must drive research and development forward on a massive scale."
