Autonomous driving - Bosch relies on three pillars

The precise localization of automated vehicles is critical to safety. This is why Bosch relies on a combination of hardware, software and services when it comes to safe, automated driving.

Bosch wants to develop holistic solutions for automated driving. Bosch board of management member Dr. Dirk Hoheisel comments: "Only the combination of hardware, software and services leads to safe, automated driving. "The Bosch approach forms a redundant system. "Services are at least as important for automated driving as hardware and software," continues Dr. Dirk Hoheisel. "We need to pursue all three paths at the same time to ensure that self-driving cars hit the roads safely and reliably."

Motion and position sensor
Bosch has developed its own sensor for the precise localization of automated vehicles: the motion and position sensor, which has a high-performance receiver unit for signals from the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), among other things. These are needed to determine the absolute position of an automated car. In order to increase the accuracy of satellite-based positioning, the company uses correction data from various providers. The sensor also has an integrated inertial sensor system - comparable to the human organ of balance. The accuracy is also increased on the software side using intelligent algorithms.

Bosch Road Signature is a map-based localization service based on the environmental sensor technology of current and future vehicles. The company offers the service in parallel to the localization solution using the motion and position sensor.
