Storage- and racking systems
VDI guideline: How to safely protect high-bay racking systems from fires
Due to the high concentration of materials and limited accessibility for firefighting, high-bay racking systems are subject to special fire protection requirements that must be taken into account when designing such systems. The revised guideline VDI 3564 Sheet 1 "Fire protection; recommendations for high-bay warehouses" describes a risk-appropriate compilation of fire protection measures in high-bay warehouses. The protection of stored material assets is at the forefront of consideration. VDI 3564 Sheet 1 applies to the planning, construction and operation of high-bay racking systems. Due to the special design of a high-bay warehouse, close cooperation between all parties responsible for safety and fire protection makes sense right from the design stage. These include the building supervisory authority, the occupational health and safety office and the property insurer. It is also advantageous to involve a fire safety expert from the start of the project. In this way, subsequent changes for a successful acceptance can be avoided in advance.
