Groundbreaking ceremony for shore power system
Kiel enables emission-free ship supply
Last Thursday saw the ground-breaking ceremony for the construction of the shore-side power plant at the Norwegenkai in Kiel. The shore-side power plant will supply ships with zero emissions while they are in port.
Start of construction of the first shore power system in Kiel's commercial port: Schleswig-Holstein's Minister of Economic Affairs Dr. Bernd Buchholz, Kiel's Lord Mayor Dr. Ulf Kämpfer, Port Director Dr. Dirk Claus and Color Line GmbH Managing Director Dirk Hundertmark broke ground at Norwegenkai together with Lars Nürnberger, Head of the Siemens branch in Kiel. From spring 2019, large cruise ferries are to be fully supplied with shore power while in port in Kiel.
Reduce emissions
Minister Buchholz: "We are taking action to make a significant contribution to keeping the air clean. Shore-side power will sustainably reduce ship emissions while they are in port. We are supporting this pioneering project and are also working at federal level to improve the economic framework conditions."
Further plants planned
The shore power system for the Norwegenkai is part of the BLUE PORT concept, which envisages further systems of this kind in Kiel. Dirk Claus comments: "After the Norwegenkai, the Schwedenkai and the cruise terminal at the Ostseekai will also be capable of using shore power by 2020. In future, we want to supply half of all ship calls in Kiel with shore-side electricity. We are thus setting standards throughout Europe."
