Thermoformed packaging elements are now an integral part of retail shelves. The aim of this development was to continue to achieve a high level of packaging functionality with reduced use of resources. In this article, the goal is achieved by reducing the film to a 3D mesh structure and thus achieving material savings of up to 50%. The 3D dimensional stability is convincing even with reduced material usage and the non-dense surface provides helpful functionality, e.g. for fresh products, so that no waterlogging occurs in the packaging and the trays are also used as drip trays by the consumer. In addition, the mesh structure of the packaging offers excellent cushioning properties, which makes it suitable for applications beyond the food sector.
50% material savings, mono-material and recyclability with a new material shape and forming technology and a wide range of applications across various product and industrial sectors were the points that convinced the jury.
