Are you too stupid too?

Do you know Jan Philipp Albrecht? The Green Party European politician is to blame for the fact that you were spammed with emails containing declarations of consent at the end of May and are now even more perplexed - because you don't know what they're all about or because you don't even know most of the people who send them to you. Because the gentleman with the three first names was instrumental in drafting the new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). In any case, he blithely babbles into every camera about how important it is for data to be secure, without any practical B2B knowledge.

And he's right. In principle. Elections must not be manipulated because the CEO of a social media giant loses track of things. You can't be stalked by Pakistani Viagra counterfeiters just because you mistyped something. You can't have your online store knowing your entire financial situation just because you pay by instant bank transfer. Your tax office should not know how far you actually drive to work. The protection of privacy is a valuable asset and data leeches such as Google, Facebook and the tax office must be kept under close scrutiny.

But what does this look like in practice for companies that deal with intralogistics on a full-time basis? Is it possible that, as an exhibitor at LogiMAT, you have to have everyone who visits your stand sign a protocol that regulates what you can and cannot do with their business card? That intralogistics experts have one foot in ruin because they send an invitation to someone who doesn't want it? Or who wants to do them harm? Will anyone who sends me and others an unsolicited email asking if they can be added to a mailing list now be prosecuted? In other words, the GDPR somehow lacks a pragmatic B2B solution.

"You shouldn't let yourself go crazy now," Mr. Albrecht gives some really helpful advice in an interview on "Zeit online". But also: "We all have to take a good look at ourselves and realize that communicating an EU law requires an extra effort." In other words: we didn't realize that people are too stupid to understand these 99 articles. Perhaps he didn't either. Because he is now to become Minister of Agriculture in Schleswig-Holstein.
