Nordfrost in Wesel: Port operations started

Frozen food logistics company Nordfrost has now started operational ship handling at its new port location in Wesel on the Lower Rhine. The first containers were successfully unloaded from the barge before Easter using the company's own mobile harbor crane.

Nordfrost has now taken the first step towards commissioning its new port terminal in Wesel on the Lower Rhine. Now that the family-owned company, which has its headquarters in Schortens, Friesland, has completed initial construction work along the 175-metre-long pier to improve the quay area, a mobile harbour crane will be permanently stationed on it. The Liebherr LHM 180, which was delivered to Nordfrost at the beginning of March and assembled on site, has now been used to load containers for the first time. On the morning of March 31, the Belgian-flagged cargo ship "Amphira" brought fifteen containers, which were unloaded by the logistics company. The ship was able to depart from the Nordfrost terminal on time. This first test loading will now be followed by further ship transhipments, which will also involve the Nordfrost cold stores located in the terminal's regional vicinity with their extensive storage capacities. At the same time, the operation of a container depot including services such as washing, repairing and PTI checks will begin. A container gantry crane, for which the crane rails have already been laid, will also be used when the cold store is commissioned directly at the terminal.

Nordfrost's port site in Wesel is connected to the ARA ports of Antwerp, Rotterdam and Amsterdam with daily inland waterway connections and also offers direct short-sea services to other European seaports. A deep-freeze warehouse, warehouses for goods in the plus-degree temperature range and for general cargo as well as project loading halls are to be built on the 16-hectare site over time. The logistics center is scheduled to open at the beginning of 2023. A three-digit number of reefer loading stations will also ensure the best conditions for handling refrigerated transport, for which the port location is also integrated into the so-called Cool Corridor: an initiative of the Port of Rotterdam and DeltaPort Niederrheinhäfen GmbH, which aims to optimize supply chains from an ecological and efficiency perspective.
