Simon Motter new Head of Volkswagen Group Logistics

Thomas Zernechel is retiring after 16 years as Head of Volkswagen Group Logistics and Chairman of the Board of Management. He will be succeeded by Simon Motter on January 1, 2021.

"Thomas Zernechel has decisively developed logistics within the Group and merged the processes across plant, brand and Group functions - thereby creating considerable synergies. He has also consistently focused on new technologies, digitalization and sustainability in logistics, bringing them to a sustainable level. Last but not least, Thomas Zernechel and his team have successfully guided the Group's logistics through many crises - including the current coronavirus situation. We would like to thank him for his outstanding work," said Gerd Walker, Head of Production and Logistics at the Volkswagen Group. "With Simon Motter, he is now being succeeded by an internationally experienced Group expert and thoroughbred logistician who will continue to drive forward the topics of digitalization and climate protection."

Simon Motter moved to Group Logistics on November 1, 2020 and is preparing for his new role. Born in Berlin and a graduate industrial engineer, he comes from Audi, where he was Head of Supply Chain at the Ingolstadt plant before moving to Wolfsburg. Previously, he was Head of International Logistics at Audi, Head of Operations Logistics at the Audi engine plant in Györ, Hungary, Head of Process and Concept Development in Audi Brand Logistics, and was also involved in logistics optimization at SEAT in Martorell, Spain.

Volkswagen Group Logistics is one of the largest logistics service providers in Europe. With more than 800 employees, it manages a global logistics network and transports around 200 million vehicle parts and 43,000 vehicles per day. In Europe alone, 6,000 railroad cars and 25,000 trucks are on the road every day. Worldwide, Logistics ships 250,000 containers by ship every year.
