Digitization
Rio digitizes group logistics at VW
RIO, the digital brand of the Traton Group, wants to support the Volkswagen Group's corporate logistics in digitizing its processes. The aim of the collaboration: significant savings through more transparent and efficient processes.
More than 150 haulage companies are active for the VW Group. In future, every truck in this network will be recorded in the same digital environment. The basis for this is to be created by Traton subsidiary RIO. Since 2016, the brand has been developing a cloud-based logistics platform that supports all parties in the supply chain in the digitalization of their business. RIO works independently of manufacturers.
More transparency for optimized business management
In Europe alone, Volkswagen Group Logistics coordinates an average of 18,000 truck transports every day in the network of suppliers, production facilities, sales markets and dealers. Group Logistics faces the challenge of managing the increasing flow of materials and goods with 13 Group brands and needs a powerful IT solution for this. Thomas Zernechel, Head of Volkswagen Group Logistics: "The complexity of our business is enormous. Through the planned cooperation with RIO, we are driving forward digitalization in the transport sector and gaining more transparency. This will enable us to optimally manage and further perfect our business in detail. Optimizing capacity utilization by further reducing empty runs and downtimes will also help us to achieve our climate protection goals."
More efficiency for inbound and outbound logistics
RIO is now to develop customized services for Volkswagen Group logistics that will make the supply of parts to Volkswagen Group sites (inbound logistics) and the delivery of fully assembled vehicles (outbound logistics) more efficient. This includes shipment tracking as well as the integration of different systems for more efficient data collection and use.
High potential for cloud-based digital solutions
Matthias Braun, Head of Digitalization of Material Logistics at Group Logistics: "Cloud-based digital solutions that work at the interface between freight and carrier have the potential to increase our efficiency many times over. With its digital expertise and open approach, RIO is the ideal partner for us. We are also going onto this platform with our volume in order to set a signal in the market. We hope that others will follow suit to make logistics more efficient for everyone based on transparent processes."
