Logistics service provider
Hellmann is the first user to load at the Lehrte MegaHub
Hellmann Worldwide Logistics has been the first customer to use the MegaHub in Lehrte since mid-June. The facility for combined transport (CT) is operated by MegaHub Lehrte Betreibergesellschaft mbH, a subsidiary of Deutsche Umschlaggesellschaft Schiene-Straße (DUSS).
In the high-speed transshipment facility, loading units are transferred from trucks directly onto trains and then transported to their destination in shorter times.
The use of the MegaHub Lehrte enables the global logistics service provider to combine routes more flexibly and to consolidate the intermodal transport network in Germany and Europe. The new handling facility is located just a few hundred meters from the Hellmann branch in Lehrte. Shorter distances between the transshipment warehouse and the CT terminal mean that pre- and post-carriage processes for rail transport can be optimized. At the same time, Hellmann is increasing its capacities by significantly reducing loading and transportation times. By avoiding around 40 truck trips a day between the underground warehouse and the previously used CT terminal in Hannover Linden, carbon dioxide emissions will also be significantly reduced.
Routes from Scandinavia, Poland and the Benelux countries converge at the rail hub in Lehrte. At the same time, the good connection to road transport offers Hellmann the opportunity to further expand combined transport and to offer additional trains via the Lehrte mega hub in the future. Shifting more road transportation to rail also contributes to compliance with the German government's climate package.
"Thanks to the new CT system, we can link our previously individual train services into a network by recombining the routes we offer. This opens up considerable growth prospects for us as a company. At the same time, our customers benefit from the fact that we are expanding our rail capacities and increasing our service quality," says Dirk Baerbock, Head of Multimodal Solutions Europe, Hellmann Worldwide Logistics.
