Competition: Sustainable urban logistics

Deliver quietly at night

The "GeNaLog" research project was recognized as one of the winning projects in the "Sustainable Urban Logistics" competition by Federal Environment Minister Svenja Schulze. The basic idea of the project is to shift some of the delivery traffic to the night and off-peak hours.

Reduce emissions

The "GeNaLog" (low-noise night logistics) research project, funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), aimed to reduce noise and pollution pollution and traffic congestion in urban areas. To this end, the project partners researched a service-based logistics concept for supplying retail outlets using electric trucks and tested it under real-life conditions. The REWE Group from Cologne, DOEGO Fruchthandel und Import eG and DLG Dortmunder Logistik Gesellschaft mbH participated as companies. The two Fraunhofer Institutes for Material Flow and Logistics IML and for Systems and Innovation Research ISI provided scientific support for the project, while the cities of Dortmund, Karlsruhe and Cologne were involved as partners.

Successful test phase

During the test phase, which lasted five weeks, several REWE Group stores in Cologne were supplied with an electric truck after 10 pm. This was equipped with low-noise handling equipment. The noise limits were adhered to during the tests.
