DPD expands service

The parcel and express service provider DPD is expanding its service during the coronavirus pandemic and continuing to deliver reliably. With new processes for contactless parcel delivery, the company also wants to protect the health of deliverers and consignees. The network of Pickup parcel stores, which was temporarily unavailable due to the closure of numerous stores ordered by the authorities, will be gradually restarted from March 25.

"Especially in difficult times, the delivery of parcels is more important than ever: we are making an important contribution to the basic supply of goods to people and companies in Germany," explains DPD CEO Eric Malitzke. "Despite the unprecedented challenge posed by the corona pandemic, we continue to offer our customers a systemically important infrastructure and remain fully efficient while maintaining the same high quality. This would not be possible without the tremendous commitment of our delivery staff, to whom I owe my great gratitude and respect."

Contactless delivery
Until further notice, recipients no longer have to sign on the parcel carrier's hand scanner when receiving parcels. In addition, parcels will no longer be handed over from hand to hand. The delivery person will continue to ring the recipient's doorbell, but will always keep a distance of two meters from them. The parcel carrier places the parcel near the front door and confirms the handover with his own signature. At the same time DPD calls on all private consignees to give a drop-off okay if possible, so that the delivery driver can leave the parcel in the garage or garden shed, for example, without any contact. "With a deposit okay every consignee can help to make parcel shipping ideally compatible with the current requirement to avoid contact," appeals DPD CEO Eric Malitzke.

Large number of parcel stores open
From March 25th many DPD Pickup parcelshops will be available again. In order to avoid customers' and consignees' parcels possibly being unavailable for weeks due to the closure of stores ordered by the authorities, DPD initially collected all stored parcels from the parcel stores last week and delivered them as normal. However, numerous Pickup parcelshop locations are integrated into stores that are allowed to remain open due to official exemptions. The processes in the parcel stores have also been adapted so that parcel collection and the private sending and returning of parcels is completely contactless. This means that the recipient's signature is no longer required in the parcel store either. In addition, a minimum distance also applies here when parcels are handed over.

DPD is taking a number of measures to help counteract the further spread of the coronavirus and protect its own workforce. Employees whose presence on site is not absolutely necessary are working from home until further notice. Business trips are limited to a necessary minimum, and participation in mass events such as trade fairs is suspended until further notice.
