Digitization index for SMEs
Can logistics go digital?
Deutsche Telekom's "Digitalization Index for SMEs 2019/2020" also took a close look at logistics and transport companies. The result: with an average of 61 index points, the degree of digitalization of traffic, transport and logistics companies is once again well above the average for all sectors this year.
Digitalization is of great importance for future business development in logistics. More than half of companies (53%) have already firmly anchored the topic in their business strategy. A further 26% of companies are in the process of implementing their first digital projects.
Winning customers with social media
The traffic, transportation and logistics sectors achieved an outstanding result in the "relationship with customers" indicator with 60 index points. 59% of respondents already use social media networks to acquire potential customers, while 44% rely on search engine marketing. This puts the logistics sector well ahead in the rankings. And the measures are paying off: Almost nine out of ten companies surveyed (86 percent) stated that they were able to acquire customers better as a result and for three out of four companies (78 percent), the strategy had a positive impact on sales.
Analysis of real-time data widespread
While tracking and tracing solutions have long been standard in logistics, near-real-time data analysis of location, loading or traffic volumes for supply chain planning is still new. However, the industry is also scoring points here: 40 percent of companies monitor their goods transportation in real time and a further 25 percent intend to introduce such a solution soon. A good third (34%) use an app to record all journeys in a digital logbook. Just as many use an app for route planning.
Digital waybills still rare
Digitization makes it possible to switch from paper-based logistics to paperless logistics. According to the German Road Haulage, Logistics and Disposal Association (BGL), this could save hundreds of millions every year in Germany alone. However, according to the study, only 16 percent of the logistics and transport companies surveyed work with digital consignment notes. A further third have concrete plans to introduce a corresponding solution.
Great interest in AI and robotics
Logistics companies are well above the average for all sectors in terms of their interest in artificial intelligence (AI) solutions. More than three quarters (77%) see potential in AI for their industry, with 27% even seeing great to very great potential. However, only seven percent actually use AI technologies.
actually use AI technologies.
Top digitizers achieve more turnover
Why is digitalization stalling even though it is clear that digital solutions can simplify processes and increase customer satisfaction? One reason is the high investment costs, which 35% of respondents fear and are therefore holding back on the path to digital transformation.
are holding back.
