Green Gate to Europe: Sustainable Warehouse
Rhenus Warehousing Solutions celebrated the opening of its new multi-user site in Wesel on August 11. The 86,000 square meter logistics property meets all the requirements for BREEAM Excellence certification.
Rhenus Warehousing Solutions celebrated its new site in the Rhine-Lippe port of Wesel at the mouth of the River Lippe with an opening ceremony. One of the largest connected photovoltaic systems in Europe with a peak output of 9 megawatts generates electricity for the facility. Among other things, this is used to power the geothermal system that airconditions the building.
"The 86,000 square meter site is also self-sufficient at night thanks to extensive battery storage systems. This means that the new logistics center obtains all the energy it needs for its daily operations from natural resources," explained Dr. Stephan Peters, a member of the Rhenus Group's Management Board. The façade is partially greened to bind carbon dioxide.
Certification according to BREEAM Excelllence
In addition to electric charging stations for cars and e-bikes, a dedicated bus stop directly in front of the building will ensure that employees get to work in the most climate-friendly way possible in future. Insect hotels and birdhouses round off the site's sustainable features. The logistics property therefore meets all the criteria for BREEAM Excellence certification. "Together, we have embarked on a path that is based on sustainability and is taking another step in the right direction with a fossil-free energy supply," confirms Klemens Rethmann, shareholder of the Rhenus Group.
Rhenus Warehousing Solutions handles customized logistics services across all sectors in ten units. Four hall sections are also designed for WGK3 use so that hazardous substances can be stored there without any problems.
