Forklifts & Components

Next stop money printing machine

The oldest printing press manufacturer in the world, the Koenig & Bauer Group in Würzburg, is using 70 new Hyster forklift trucks in its plants. An internal forklift guidance system ensures that the machines travel to around 200 different "stations" on the company premises in Würzburg.

We can't afford empty runs," says Transport Manager Olaf Wittmeier at Koenig & Bauer in Würzburg. "Our aim is to use the forklift truck required for in-house transportation, which picks up urgent shipments first and arrives at the "station" where the employee is waiting for the parts in good time." For this purpose, the robust Hyster forklift trucks have a display in the cab that shows the driver the next orders directly. Intelligent control software for the forklift guidance system then calculates the optimum route and reduces the number of empty runs to a minimum.

While part of the Hyster forklift fleet is controlled by a control system, the other forklifts are directly integrated into the production process or are used for loading and unloading the trucks. The range of industrial trucks extends from electric pallet trucks, type P1.8, to pallet trucks of type S1.6 with and without initial lift, the pallet truck S1.5S with foldable platform, double-deck pallet trucks of type P2.0SD and electric counterbalance trucks with 48 and 80 volts as well as diesel trucks such as the Hyster H3.0FT and H5.5FT Advance.

Inventor of the world's first cylinder printing press

In 1812, Friedrich Koenig and Andreas Bauer invented the world's first cylinder printing press in London, laying the foundations for industrial printing. Five years later, the pioneers founded the first Koenig & Bauer high-speed press factory in Würzburg. Today, inkjet and offset web presses for commercial, decorative, functional, packaging and newspaper printing are produced here. Koenig & Bauer is a world leader in large-format sheetfed offset and newspaper printing. The largest sheetfed offset presses process up to 18,000 sheets per hour and have six printing units.

In recent years, Koenig & Bauer has had to make capacity adjustments due to advancing digitalization and a slump in the advertising market. This has not been without consequences for intralogistics. In 2000, for example, a fully automated small parts warehouse and a pallet warehouse were put into operation. Parts up to 2.2 meters long can also be stored in the pallet warehouse, from where they are transported to the nearest train station by forklift truck.

Four-wheel electric forklifts replace combustion engines

In order to save operating costs, we also decided to fundamentally modernize our forklift truck fleet," says Logistics Manager Hermann Schätzlein from Koenig & Bauer in Würzburg. "Wherever possible, we have replaced old diesel forklifts with modern, emission-free four-wheel electric counterbalance trucks from Hyster, which protect the environment." The electric forklifts with a load capacity of 1.8 to 4.5 tons are the mainstay of operation. The Hyster J1.6-2.0XN series forklifts are characterized by their tight turning circle.

Like the J1.6-2.0XN series, the more powerful J3.0XN counterbalance trucks also have a minimal turning circle and are particularly suitable for demanding applications during long shifts thanks to their powerful three-phase AC technology for the drive and lifting mechanism. Koenig & Bauer equips some 3-ton forklifts with an integrated fork positioner and sideshift as well as KOOI telescopic forks, which enable the trucks to be loaded and unloaded from one side. In addition, some machines are equipped with 360º rotating fork clamps for transporting and directly emptying open metal boxes.

Intra means: Want to have!

"Of course", you'll be thinking, money printing machine and Intra, all right. She needs something like this so she can store more. But no, if I could ever get my hands on one of these fancy things, I'd print a round of the colorful printed paper that makes the world go round and: donate it to charity! Not just because Christmas is coming up. Sharing and giving brings joy, that's for sure!

Forklift trucks for indoor and outdoor use

"At our plant in Frankenthal, we use the Hyster J4.5XN for heavy loads," says Schätzlein. "The powerful machine with a lifting capacity of 4.5 tons is suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. With low energy consumption, the electric forklift achieves a performance comparable to IC engine-powered forklifts. Like the J3.0XN machine, the stackers are equipped with a rotating fork clamp and transport metal containers and heavy components for the printing machines.

Modernization successfully completed

Almost a year after the switch to Hyster, Schätzlein draws a positive balance. "We have succeeded in significantly reducing the total cost of ownership. The weekly deployment of a technician was reduced to three days a week thanks to the purchase of the lower-maintenance new machines." Initially, it was not at all clear that Hyster would win the tender. It was only at the last second that Hyster dealer Jochen Kotschenreuther, Managing Director of Kotschenreuther Stapler- und Systemtechnik GmbH in Steinwiesen near Kronach in Upper Franconia, submitted the bid. Thanks to the standardization of the 3-ton forklifts and an optimal full-service offer, Kotschenreuther was ultimately able to prevail against the competition and convince not only the management but also the works council and the driver representatives. "Everything stands and falls with the service," says Wittmeier. "That was the most convincing argument for us to only use Hyster forklifts in all plants in future." Then everything had to happen very quickly. The first 50 forklifts were replaced within three months.

"It was a challenge for us to deliver so many machines in such a short space of time," says Kotschenreuther. "We used our own rental fleet to temporarily cover the demand. In the end, everything went smoothly," says Kotschenreuther. "Without the professional guidance from the experts at Koenig & Bauer, this would not have been possible."
