New vertical order picker in first use
Liebherr-Hydraulikbagger has tested the new PXV vertical order picker from Still. With reach heights of 14.5 meters, it reaches even the highest shelves. In addition to the picking height, the high lifting and lowering speeds as well as the simultaneous lifting and lowering of the main and additional lift are the performance features of the new truck.
Liebherr-Hydraulikbagger develops and manufactures an extensive range of high-quality hydraulic excavators, material handlers and articulated dump trucks. The powerful machines are firmly established in various applications in many branches of industry and are used worldwide. In 2021, the company produced a turnover of around 870 million euros with around 1,900 employees.
The company responded to increasing demand in 2019 and 2021 with two construction phases for a larger production warehouse. As the general contractor, Still planned, supplied and installed the warehouse and conveyor technology, including industrial trucks. The range of assembly parts is huge at 27,000 items. Large and heavy assembly parts are stored on pallets in the 22 meter high warehouse. The production orders are picked daily onto pallets and pallet cages using eleven MX-X narrow-aisle order pickers. Long and bulky assembly parts are stored separately in a wide-aisle warehouse. Equipped with an extra-long swivel push fork, the production orders are also put together on special pallets there with the help of an MX-X.
Jochen Rudolf, Head of Intralogistics at Liebherr Hydraulic Excavators, sums up: "With the maximum picking height of 17.4 meters and a load capacity of 30 tonnes per rack bay, we have reached the limits of what is feasible in our pallet warehouse."
Flying high: forklift-guided shelf storage system
Storage in the production warehouse is evenly distributed to ensure even capacity utilization. In two shifts, 30 employees pick according to ABC and FIFO. This amounts to 3,000 retrievals and 2,000 putaways per day. Smaller assembly parts are stored in KLT containers in a shelving racking system. With 12 meter high racks and 40 levels, this warehouse is also enormous in size. Assembly orders are picked using six EK-X vertical order pickers. When compiling the production orders, the inductively guided vehicles find their way with assistance systems from Still.
The PXV vertical order picker is the successor to the EK-X. It has impressed Jochen Rudolf in field tests: "Thanks to the extraordinary reach height, we can now also pick at chest height on the top shelf. The dangerous 'overhead lifting' is finally a thing of the past." Alexander Claus, Product Manager for narrow-aisle vehicles at Still, adds: "With a reach height of 14.5 meters, the new order picker reaches the highest shelves. This enables an unbeatable degree of space utilization. Warehouses can continue to expand in height with our vehicle without sealing additional floor space."
More performance and safety in the workflow
Thanks to modern proportional valve technology, the lifting speed of the PXV can be infinitely adjusted. The smooth mast transitions not only ensure comfortable working, but also impressive goods handling. Cengiz Beckel, team leader for the production warehouse, confirms: "There are no more vibrations and oscillations during the now continuous mast transitions. With the PXV, safe travel in the drive direction without a free lift always enables a clear view through the mast."
On the PXV with free lift, the two free lift cylinders positioned offset to the mast profile also ensure good mast visibility in the drive direction. The team leader adds that the controls on the test vehicle offer maximum flexibility thanks to the load and lift-side operation. It is no longer even necessary to press a button combination when changing operation. A sensor automatically switches the operating elements simply by moving the hands closer. This ensures maximum safety during order picking at all times. The option of double-sided operation ensures efficient and fast goods handling.
During order picking, the additional lift can be lowered at the same time as the main lift at the touch of a button with Still Easy Touch. Otherwise, the intelligent assistance systems from Still ensure more goods throughput. Jochen Rudolf confirms: "With the assistance systems, the correct storage location is reached quickly. Still has specifically stored the 40 levels of our shelf storage system in iGo pilot navigation for this purpose."
More comfort, more ergonomics, more space
Adapted to individual requirements, the intuitive and ergonomic control panel with steering wheel or steering knob enables easy operation of all functions. In the spacious cab, the intelligent storage concept offers plenty of space for a data terminal, scanner, printer and other work equipment. Even rounded cab elements have been made angular as possible storage areas for small containers in the new PXV. The anti-trap protection for fingers when folding up the tilt barrier has also been improved.
Numerous details such as the ergonomic driver's seat with optional tilt technology, the proportional seat and footrest adjustment and the adaptation of all controls to the driver's ergonomics as well as the panoramic mirror ensure the best view of the fork tips.
Knee and leaning pads complete the driver's comfortable and healthy workplace. The side tilt barrier on the driver's cab enables convenient access to goods right up to the rear. The generously shock-absorbing stand-on platform with integrated presence switch offers maximum user comfort. Fast loading with direct loading access ensures the high availability of the PXV. The simple handling of the plug connection makes the charging process much easier.
