Winner material flow PRODUCTS OF THE YEAR 2023

Daniel Schilling,

Linde Material Handling: Linde Steer Control

3rd place in category 3: Forklift trucks, forklift components and AGVs: Linde Steer Control is a new type of electro-hydraulic steering system that does not require a traditional steering wheel. Instead, the driver's arm rests on an armrest.

The operator can control the truck with his left hand using either an integrated mini-wheel or a joystick. The advantage of this equipment option is that working in the truck becomes more relaxed and the driver remains focused and efficient for longer. Looking to the future, the electric control of the steering functions fulfills another requirement for the automated counterbalanced truck. The forklift driver's workplace is of particular importance as the interface between man and machine. Only if employees can operate the truck easily, simply and quickly can its performance potential be fully exploited. The better this is achieved, the higher the handling performance and thus ultimately the efficiency of internal goods handling. Linde Steer Control is a further development of the proven Linde operating concept with double pedal control and Linde Load Control. Tiring turning movements of the steering wheel with the entire arm are no longer necessary, the driver's left arm now rests on an armrest (as does the right arm) and the mini-wheel or joystick are only operated by hand. The steering, which responds to the vehicle speed, ensures smooth movements. If the truck is traveling faster, the mini-wheel must be turned more or the joystick must be tilted further to the side to cause the wheels to steer a certain amount. If the driver reduces the speed of the truck, the same hand movement results in a greater steering deflection. Technically, Linde Steer Control is based on steer-by-wire technology. Control commands from the driver are converted into electrical signals and transmitted to hydraulic actuators. A highly developed safety concept guarantees the reliability of the vehicle control system.
