Martin Schrüfer,

Forklift for Europe's largest sawmill

The Ziegler Group, based in Plößberg, employs around 2,000 people and operates Europe's largest sawmill with an output of 2.2 million cubic meters of wood on an area of 42 hectares. The company's fleet of 100 forklift trucks includes 25 Hyundai 7- and 8-ton trucks with an annual output of up to 7,000 hours. In 2021, around 25 Hyundai machines will be replaced with new ones. The partner is Hyundai Gabelstapler Süd, based in Eberstadt near Heilbronn.

Around 100 forklifts from 3.0 to 12 tons are currently in use at six locations. In Plößberg there are 46 trucks, 25 of which are already from Hyundai. Their application profile: loading sawn timber, disposing of production lines and feeding drying chambers on the huge factory premises in Plößberg near Weiden. The Hyundai 70D-9 (7 t/600 mm LSP) and 80D-9 (8 t/600 mm LSP) forklifts are operated by alternating drivers and are not spared during the three-shift operation. The combination of 75 kW Cummins QSF 3.8 diesel engine with SCR and EGR as an exhaust gas purification process and ZF transmission with three forward/reverse gears each is used there. The front loaders reach 25 km/h when loaded, manage the long ramps with ease and have proven to be robust in tough three-shift operation. All Hyundai 70D-9/80D-9 are equipped with a duplex mast for a lifting height of 4,500 mm. The Hyundai sideshift/tine adjuster is standard, Ziegler mounts a protective grille on the lift masts to protect against falling timber. The 8-tonner is praised by Hyundai with the larger 9.00-R20 tires instead of the 8.25-15 for more smooth running and greater ground clearance, according to the company.

Good availability of spare parts

The workshop manager praises Hyundai's performance when it comes to spare parts supply: "The parts ordered by 3:30 p.m. are actually with us in Plößberg the next morning. In general, I can attest to the fact that the yellow forklifts from South Korea really do require minimal maintenance. Even changing the spare parts takes very little time. There are also no problems with Hyundai in the event of any problems. Our Hyundai sales manager, André Germeck, issues a service bulletin and the manufacturer takes care of the problem. The whole process is very straightforward.

The standard equipment of the diesel trucks includes a Cummins QSF 3.8 engine with 75 kW output, a tilting cab with air conditioning and Grammer seat, an automatic display for dirty air filters, LED headlights and a reversing camera. Tilt-Lock, Drive-Lock and Liftlock prevent unintentional movement of the lift mast, forks and forklift when the driver is not seated.
