EDEKA, Germany's largest food retailer, is working with Witron to build its fifth logistics center using Witron OPM technology.

From the beginning of 2022, the new distribution center at the Oberhausen site will supply almost 600 stores of the EDEKA regional company Rhein-Ruhr with a good 10,000 different items from the dry goods range every day. As general contractor, Witron is responsible for the planning, integration and service of all IT and mechanical components in the dry goods range.

EDEKA's main reason for the new building in Oberhausen was that the regional warehouse in Moers could no longer be economically modernized or expanded due to its age and location and will now be integrated into the new logistics center. In addition, the Oberhausen site will take on an expanded regional warehouse range in order to relieve the central warehouse in Hamm in the future.

The 39,000m2 facility with a total of 57,000 pallet spaces, 450,000 tray spaces and 57 highly dynamic storage and retrieval machines is designed for a daily picking capacity of 252,000 retail units. The majority of these are placed on pallets or roll containers fully automatically, error-free and in line with store requirements by 22 COM machines. Bulky items are picked by logistics employees supported by a pick-by-voice system, controlled by the semi-automated Witron Car Picking System (CPS). This enables several store orders to be picked in parallel on one industrial truck. Half, third and quarter pallets are placed fully automatically on pallet and roll containers by the Witron Display Pallet Picking system (DPP). An intelligent Witron IT ecosystem ensures the holistic networking of all processes within the internal and external supply chain, guaranteeing a high degree of flexibility and process optimization in real time.

As in the logistics locations realized by Witron in Hamm (EDEKA Rhein-Ruhr), Landsberg/Lech (EDEKA Südbayern), Zarrentin (EDEKA Nord) and Berbersdorf (EDEKA Nordbayern, Sachsen, Thüringen), a Witron onsite team is responsible for the maintenance and servicing of all process and system components.
