Supervisory Board decides on investment
Lufthansa Cargo renews air cargo center in Frankfurt
Lufthansa Cargo will continue the modular development and renovation of the logistics center at its home hub in Frankfurt. The Supervisory Board of the German airfreight company has decided to invest in a comprehensive infrastructure program for the logistics center. The complete modernization of the Lufthansa Cargo Center began in January 2021 and is scheduled for completion in 2028.
"With this renovation of our logistics center, we are investing in our air freight location in Frankfurt and creating the structural conditions for even faster and more efficient air freight. In doing so, we are also future-proofing the jobs of our employees at our most important logistics location in Germany," explains Peter Gerber, CEO of the cargo airline.
"The special thing about our infrastructure program is that it can react flexibly to market developments and the changing needs of our customers," emphasizes Harald Gloy, Chief Operations Officer of Lufthansa Cargo. "The holistically designed upgrade of the building infrastructure in combination with improvements to the logistics system and internal material flows will further increase the handling speed of shipments and the quality of service for all Lufthansa Cargo customers."
The freight center in Frankfurt is Lufthansa Cargo's home hub, handling around 80 percent of its global freight volume. The carrier's commitment to digitalization, new product requirements and the growing importance of e-commerce have changed the demands placed on the logistics center. The first step in the modular infrastructure program is currently the construction of the new central high-bay warehouse at the Lufthansa Cargo Center. In addition to new buildings, existing building sections and warehouses are also being modernized as part of the eight-year infrastructure project. The refurbishment and renewal of the buildings will take place during ongoing operations. The modular approach will not result in any restrictions for customers.
