Lufthansa Cargo expands cargo capacity
In cooperation with Lufthansa and Austrian Airlines, Lufthansa Cargo is further expanding its airfreight capacity between Europe and Asia.
There are currently 14 flights a week between Frankfurt and mainland China using Boeing 777F wide-body freighters with a standard load capacity of around 103 tons. From Easter, 35 weekly flights will be added with Lufthansa passenger aircraft exclusively for freight transportation. As the cabin space of these aircraft can also be loaded with cargo, this will result in an average cargo capacity of around 30 tons each in practice.
Specifically, there will be two daily connections from Frankfurt to Shanghai (PVG) and one daily connection to Beijing (PEK) with Airbus A330-300 aircraft. From Munich, one Airbus A350-900 will take off daily to Shanghai (PVG) and one to Beijing (PEK). In order to further increase the possible cargo volume, particularly for the transportation of comparatively light cargo such as protective masks, parts of the cabin interiors of initially four Lufthansa aircraft will be upgraded.
In Austria, Austrian Airlines is expected to offer 16 flights a week from Vienna Airport for freight transportation from Easter onwards. Shanghai (PVG) will be served eight times, Beijing (PEK) five times, Penang (PEN) twice and Xiamen (XMN) once a week. Boeing 767-300 and Boeing 777-200 passenger jets will be used.
