The portfolio of the globally active company includes the brands Anthropologie, BHLDN, Free People, Terrain, Urban Outfitters and Nuuly - as well as a food & beverage division. Urban Outfitters recently commissioned intralogistics specialist TGW to install a highly automated solution for a new distribution center in the UK. The go-live is already planned for 2021.

The centerpiece is a FlashPick system for fully automated single-item picking. In the incoming goods department, the incoming cartons are reloaded into containers and stored in the automated small parts warehouse (AKL). The latter supplies the shuttle system with replenishment. From there, the orders are sent to 15 high-performance good-to-person workstations and then to packaging or dispatch.

The individual areas of the facility are connected to each other with energy-efficient KingDrive conveyor technology. All processes are monitored by the TGW Warehouse Control System, which is connected to the Manhattan WMS via an interface. TGW's intelligent, self-learning Rovolution picking robot is also used.

"TGW impressed us during the bidding phase - with a clear vision, which is necessary for a strategic solution for our complex product range," explains Iain Bartholomew, International & European Logistics Director at URBN. "The new distribution center in Peterborough will be highly automated, using robotics to create the necessary capacity for our strong growth. TGW has helped us to develop a modular solution that is both simple and flexible - adapting to the future needs of our customers."
