Smart logistics ideas to the power of two
From the warehouse technology specialist for the logistics expert - Bito-Lagertechnik has implemented two new logistics systems in parallel for Briem Speditions.
Briem Speditions has built a logistics facility on a 7,000 m² open space at its main site in Filderstadt. At the same time, Briem founded a second location in Münsingen, 45 kilometers away, and built a logistics center there on an area of 11,000 m². Both facilities were designed with Bito-Lagertechnik Bittmann. In each case, the strategy was to use standard solutions from the Bito portfolio for reasons of efficiency and to avoid structural problems. It was also important to align both pallet racking systems to Euro pallet dimensions in order to comply with standards and be compatible with all of the logistics service provider's customers.
Logistics systems for different customer requirements
Franziska and Maximilian Briem: "Our customers come from a wide variety of industries, each with diverse requirements that we reliably fulfill to the highest standard. In the area of hazardous goods storage, there are also important things to consider. Our logistics facility must therefore be equipped with state-of-the-art storage technology and corresponding storage, picking and transportation systems. We knew that building two facilities of this size at two different locations at the same time would be a very special challenge. We needed a really competent and reliable partner for this. We immediately thought of Bito-Lagertechnik because we have always worked well together in the past. A meeting at LogiMAT gave us further points of sympathy; it is extremely important to us that the interpersonal relationships are right and that we can work together on an equal footing and in a spirit of trust. Last but not least, we were impressed by the efficient concepts, good ideas and suggestions, which also saved us a lot of money."
New logistics facility with focus on hazardous materials storage
In addition to storing its customers' products, Briem's facility in Münsingen also covers value-added services such as returns management, order picking, packaging and packing. It is also designed as a central warehouse for hazardous materials. The logistics center is set up as a pure standard pallet racking warehouse as a high-bay warehouse or block warehouse and is equipped with the safety precautions and fire protection devices for the storage of hazardous substances. It is divided into three hall sections, each with 1,536 storage spaces, which are subdivided into fire compartments and flexibly usable multi-user areas.
In order to make the storage area as efficient as possible, a narrow aisle warehouse was implemented. The aisle width is designed so that a standard operating device can just about drive through the aisles and operate the pallet racks. In addition, the hall height is utilized to the maximum in order to create as much storage space as possible at height.
As the Münsingen logistics center mainly stores highly explosive hazardous materials, the storage areas intended for this purpose are equipped in accordance with fire protection requirements. Fire protection devices have been installed both horizontally and vertically, i.e. sprinkler systems and fire protection plates or thermal dust barriers, so that each level of the pallet racking system and also the passageways are protected in the event of an emergency.
Site expansion with new logistics facility in Filderstadt
The new logistics facility in Filderstadt - for classic storage and retrieval and picking of goods and value-added services such as testing, packaging or labeling - is connected to the existing facility via a transit aisle.
The goods are stored in pallet racks in the upper area of the system, while the lower area is the picking zone. Depending on the goods, the picking area is designed as a pallet warehouse or as a unit load warehouse and is equipped with Bito flow racks for unit loads. Bito has also developed shelf trolleys specially adapted to the requirements for storing and picking small parts. To save space, shelving racks were placed on chassis so that they can be positioned lengthways under the pallet racks in the picking area and operated on the rollers as pull-out cabinets. The shelf trolley makes order picking easy and offers plenty of space for storing small parts.
As the new building in Filderstadt also stores products from the food sector, among others, it was divided into different temperature zones for +2 to +8 °C for chilled goods and areas that can be heated up to +21 °C and up to +27 °C.
