Modernization
Stationery retailer Pichon starts the new school year with Savoye
Papeterie Pichon claims to supply 40% of all nursery and elementary school in France. In order to cope more effectively with its highly seasonal business, the company has decided to modernize its site in Veauche, France, together with its long-standing logistics partner Savoye.
The challenge of seasonal business
As a specialist in school supplies, the company is confronted with a very seasonal business: 80% of its sales are generated in three months. "Dealing with these seasonal fluctuations is very complex, and not just from a management point of view: every summer, we go from 30 logisticians to 230. Our customers also demand ever shorter delivery times and to ensure their satisfaction, we need to achieve greater reactivity and productivity," explains Thierry Cappe, Managing Director of Pichon. In order to increase productivity and storage capacity, the company has decided to modernize its future site in Veauche. The distribution center with 18,000 m² of warehouse space and 3,600 m² of office space is scheduled to open in 2020. The new building and its facilities are intended to double the productivity of the order picking process and also increase scalability and process reliability.
Impressive overall solution
A fast, shuttle-based, goods-to-person Intelis PTS system with 40,000 locations is installed for handling light loads. For heavy loads and the storage of pallets, the shuttle-based Intelis Magmatic was chosen: With a storage capacity of 13,000 pallets, the solution consists of two Levmatic Lifts that take care of the vertical movements of the five independent shuttles for pallet movements. There will also be two pallet stackers and destackers. Two Intelis PAC 600 case erectors and two Intelis Jivaro sealing machines will also be installed to automate the packaging process. "The Savoye range is a perfect fit for our industry and clearly meets our needs. Right from the start, Savoye was able to provide us with excellent advice on how to optimize the use of our warehouse space. They will therefore accompany us throughout the entire project," concludes Thierry Cappe.
