Purchasing office of German ironmongers relies on Packaging by Quadient
The purchasing office of German ironmongers (E/D/E) has decided to improve its shipping area and is relying on packaging technology from Packaging by Quadient. The purchasing and marketing association in the production connection trade sector uses the automated packaging system "CVP Impack".
The system will be used in the more than 70,000 square meter E/D/E central warehouse in Wuppertal. Machines of this type have been running successfully for years in logistics centers all over the world, for example at the Internet Fusion Group in the UK, SportOkay.com in Austria and DeinDeal.ch in Switzerland. A wide range of products are packed into parcels in Wuppertal - soft, lightweight protective workwear as well as robust tools or sensitive devices from safety technology manufacturers.
The CVP Impack cuts, folds, glues and labels transport packs completely automatically. The machine produces a pack every twelve seconds. According to Packaging by Quadient, companies can save up to 30 percent of corrugated cardboard and up to 50 percent of transport volume on average thanks to the customized cartons. Filling material is also no longer required for the majority of orders.
According to E/D/E, environmental aspects and the high production speed of CVP Impack were decisive factors in the 2020 purchase decision. "It was important to us that we reduce consumables such as additional bubble wrap and corrugated cardboard and at the same time reduce process times in the packaging area," emphasizes Christian Peckhaus, team leader in the E/D/E business division Logistics. Other reasons for the purchase were the high packaging quality of the cartons and the long service life of the machine.
The system was commissioned after an intensive planning phase. "From the delivery by heavy transport to the installation under corona conditions and the connection to the existing conveyor technology - everything was planned down to the smallest detail and worked perfectly thanks to everyone involved," reports Peckhaus. The connection to the existing system took place in two steps. Firstly, the conveyor technology was expanded with hardware in order to fully utilize the potential of the packaging system. Secondly, the software was adapted.
The acquisition of the automated packaging solution is part of the expansion concept in logistics because E/D/E's parcel volume has increased. This trend also continued during the coronavirus pandemic. On average, the logistics center handled 6,500 parcels per day in 2019. In 2020, the average was 7,542.
E/D/E assumes that in future up to 3,500 parcels per day can be handled by CVP Impack alone. The purchasing association sends orders from the central warehouse in Wuppertal to end customers throughout Europe on behalf of its members. Around 110,000 stock items are stored in the facility. In addition, there are so-called procurement items, which are provided by selected contract suppliers on a customer-specific basis.
