Levi Strauss & Co. builds new distribution center and focuses on sustainability

In order to keep pace with the constantly growing business, Levi Strauss & Co. builds a distribution center in Dorsten, North Rhine-Westphalia, which is designed according to strict sustainability guidelines.

"This is the result of a focused and highly integrated collaboration between the companies involved," says Marc Meuleman, Managing Director Benelux, Miebach Consulting. "The understanding of the client's needs and values, combined with our expertise, has led us together to this result, where all requirements are met, including the integration of ergonomic and sustainable solutions."

Torsten Mueller, Project Lead, Levi Strauss & Co. Europe and Graham Truter, Senior Project Manager, Levi Strauss & Co. Europe say: "We chose Miebach as our partner in this journey because they have experience in such large-scale projects and offer both consultancy and hands-on engineering."

The distribution center, which will be built on an area of almost 155,000 m², will distribute up to 55 million pieces of Levi's products per year from the end of 2023. This includes fashion, accessories and shoes, which will be available for wholesale, retail, digital, e-com and the marketplace.

Since the planning phase of the logistics project, Miebach Consulting has supported Levi Strauss & Co. in the PMO, in concept validation and in the tendering process for the building and intralogistics. In the upcoming implementation phase, Miebach is supporting the fashion company as sub-project manager for the building and intralogistics and is ensuring a holistic project approach with an overarching cross-sectional function, which also includes the area of quality assurance for the IT.

The building sets new standards in terms of sustainability. The new logistics center will be the first logistics area in Germany to comply with the "cradle-to-cradle" sustainability approach. This describes a circular construction method that is based on the principles of recycling, resource conservation and waste reduction and aims to keep the ecological footprint as small as possible. The building will also receive LEED and WELL certification. The latter is the first and only certification system that is specifically geared towards the health and well-being of building users.

The technical solution will enable Levi Strauss & Co. to grow further and is optimally geared towards future market requirements. "The distribution center will include an automated goods-to-person solution, an automated small parts warehouse and a shuttle system to ensure omni-channel capability, fast returns processing, flexible adaptation to changing order structures and all future service requirements for the market," says Philipp Schubert, Project Manager, Miebach Consulting GmbH. The foundation stone for the major project is scheduled to be laid in fall 2021, and the system will go live at the end of 2023.
