The Kroger Corporation claims to be America's largest grocery retailer. The company recently announced that it is working with Knapp to expand and improve the capacity of its existing Great Lakes Distribution Center in Delaware. The facility is currently undergoing renovations to add modern technology and is scheduled to be completed this summer.

The distribution center, which opened in 2003, currently serves 115 stores in central and northwest Ohio, as well as southeast Michigan and the Ohio River Valley region. During the renovation, the facility will be expanded by approximately 12,000 square feet. Tony Lucchino, Vice President Supply Chain and Network Strategy at Kroger, said of the agreement, "Kroger's investment in Knapp's latest technology will enable the Great Lakes Distribution Center to improve efficiencies in replenishing our stores. This will enable us to deliver fresh food quickly to our customers. The expansion of the facility is part of the ongoing transformation of our supply chain network. The project will more than double our capacity while delivering innovation and scalability that can grow with demand." He adds: "This joint project will enable us to better serve customers in the region."

The site uses a combination of the OSR Shuttle Evo storage and picking system, which delivers the food to the Runpick picking and palletizing robot in an exact sequence. This increases the performance of the company's supply chain network. Josef Mentzer, CEO at Knapp North America, adds: "The technology investment at the Great Lakes distribution center was designed to add a new level of flexibility to Kroger's distribution network and generate a more robust approach to large-scale automation investments."
