Hellmann and Symbic develop innovative light guide system

Together with Hellmann Worldwide Logistic, the start-up Symbic has developed the "Logistic Lights" into what they are today - an alternative to the pick-by-light technology previously used for order picking.

Instead of equipping each shelf compartment with pick-by-light technology, as was previously the case, only a single movable spotlight is installed for picking with "Logistic Lights", which can detect any number of storage locations. By scanning the item with the MDE or finger scanner, the spotlight knows which of the carton locations needs to be illuminated so that the pickers can see at a glance where they need to sort the item. In addition to its intuitive operation, the system, which can be recalibrated within a few minutes, is characterized by a high degree of flexibility.

The Osnabrück-based start-up Symbic has developed the "Logistic Lights" specifically for use in contract logistics. As part of a pilot project, the test phase was launched at the global logistics service provider Hellmann for the Christmas season. Hellmann already recorded an average time saving of around five seconds per pick during the pilot phase thanks to the use of the "Logistic Lights".

"The system is simple but effective. And the result speaks for itself: the flexible and intuitive application increases the efficiency and satisfaction of our employees. "Logistic Lights are a good alternative to traditional pick-by-light and put-to-light systems," explains Robert Bommers, COO, Contract Logistics at Hellmann Worldwide Logistics.

Symbic Managing Director Achim Hendriks adds: "Our aim from the outset was to improve both efficiency and ergonomics in the process. Thanks to the application-related collaboration with logistics service provider Hellmann Worldwide Logistics and its expertise in contract logistics, we were able to develop a tailor-made product that impresses with its ease of use. The realized savings of an average of five seconds per pick even exceed our original expectations."

You can experience the "Logistic Lights" at the BMWi joint stand at LogiMAT 2019 (Hall 2, Stand B11L).
