Gilgen wins major contract for Migros logistics platform 2030
Migros Aare, the largest of the ten Migros cooperatives, is expanding its logistics platform. Intralogistics specialist Gilgen Logistics was awarded the major contract for this.
The distribution center in Schönbühl is reaching the limits of its capacity. It is foreseeable that there will be bottlenecks in logistics from 2020. Additional space will be required, particularly for picking chilled products and returns logistics.
The returns logistics building will be extended by 800 square meters and raised by two storeys. The existing container sorting system will be replaced by a new system for automatic container sorting and disposal of recyclable fractions such as PET, cardboard, plastic packaging and waste.
The intralogistics specialist Gilgen Logistics was commissioned to implement the new system with automatic container conveyor technology and pallet conveyor technology including control system, material flow computer and visualization.
All returns, including containers, are transported by the fresh food camions from the stores back to the operations center in Schönbühl. There, the goods are sorted and sent to the appropriate locations for reuse or disposal via the fully automated conveyor system. Up to 7,000 pallets of reusable containers and recyclable fractions are processed every day.
Gilgen is very pleased about this major order, which is being realized almost on its doorstep, says René Holzer, CEO of Gilgen Logistics. In addition to implementing the intralogistics, Gilgen's customer service team will provide full maintenance for the system for one year. The first construction work will start in the 2nd quarter of 2018. The conversion will be carried out during ongoing operations and will take around two years.
