Expert opinions on the topic of green logistics
"The topic of green logistics has a key role to play"
Peter Lambrecht, SVP Global Head of Sales Logistics Solutions at SSI Schaefer, on the importance of green logistics for logistics and intralogistics. Exclusively for the materialfluss editorial team, industry experts explain how they pursue this goal with their customers in practice.
materialfluss: Does the topic of green logistics still "pull" in discussions with customers? What should logistics managers and those responsible for logistics pay particular attention to in this area?
Lambrecht: The topic of sustainability is now firmly anchored in the corporate philosophy of many companies. As a result, green logistics is also increasingly coming into focus. In terms of the total cost of ownership, the topic already plays a key role in the planning of intralogistics equipment. Sustainability aspects for the most climate-neutral, low-consumption operation possible also determine the design of a logistics property. In addition to recording operational energy consumption, energy consumption in production, service and modernization must also be evaluated.
mfl: Which of your company's products or services comes to mind first when you think of green logistics?
Lambrecht: I would like to present the "SSI Exyz" family of storage and retrieval machines as an example of green logistics: The compact design in combination with an optimized control system reduces the space requirement so significantly that considerably less installation space is needed compared to conventional high-bay warehouses. In the area of our Green Conveyor Technology, energy-efficient conveyor technology is implemented through the use of energy-efficient drives in conjunction with intelligent control systems. The SSI Flexi single-level shuttle also stands for sustainable intralogistics. The supercapacitors integrated as an energy source not only ensure autonomous driving operation, but also consistently eliminate the need for wear-prone and friction-loss-generating components of conventional energy supply concepts. In addition, the capacitors serve as a buffer: the energy released during braking is stored without the need for additional components and used the next time the shuttle requires energy.
