Strong demand for natural gas trucks
One year after the introduction of the subsidy program for energy-efficient or low-carbon commercial vehicles, there is strong demand for the subsidy for natural gas trucks. Of the more than 1,390 vehicles subsidized so far, 1,330 have a gas drive.
"The great popularity of LNG and CNG trucks clearly shows that, according to fleet operators, environmentally friendly natural gas vehicles offer the best cost-benefit ratio. We are pleased that more and more logistics companies are recognizing these benefits and that the subsidies have been called up so extensively, especially since the second quarter of 2019," comments Dr. Timm Kehler, CEO of the Zukunft Erdgas industry initiative.
Up to 90 percent less particulate matter
Compared to diesel, natural gas produces up to 90 percent less particulate matter and nitrogen oxide emissions are also reduced. Carbon dioxide emissions are reduced by a quarter. LNG trucks accounted for a large proportion of the subsidized vehicles, with 994 applications for funding. With only 57 applications, demand for electric vehicles has been extremely low to date.
The amount of funding under the directive has also been increased from 10 to 20 million euros this year. Kehler sees this as a "groundbreaking signal for effective climate protection in mobility."
