First CNG truck for Universal Transport in operation
The high-capacity and heavy-duty logistics company Universal Transport recently added the first CNG truck to its fleet. In future, this will be used for a customer in the aviation industry and will transport high-capacity freight three to six times a week in shuttle traffic between various customer locations.
"The CNG drive is a low-emission and already readily available alternative to conventional diesel engines.CO2 emissions as well as emissions of nitrogen, fine dust and particulates are significantly reduced. In addition, trucks with gas engines are much quieter. That's why we decided to test the drive system," says Karsten Hillebrand, Managing Director of Universal Transport in Hirschaid near Bamberg, for whom the gas truck will be driving.
The aim is to make logistics more sustainable and greener in the long term through the use of innovative drives and fuels, adds Holger Dechant, Managing Director of the Universal Transport Group: "If the CNG truck proves itself in practical use, it is conceivable that our fleet will be expanded with additional gas-powered vehicles. Factors such as the future area of operation and the available filling station density must also be taken into account, as the routing of orders is fixed and not variable in high-capacity and heavy-duty transport. The reliability of the vehicles and therefore of our services must be guaranteed at all times."
The CNG truck from Spanish manufacturer IVECO has 460 hp and, according to the manufacturer, a range of 500 to 600 kilometers. Each side of the vehicle has four tanks with a total volume of 920 liters, which corresponds to a tank capacity of 160 kilograms. The cab has a driver-friendly design. The vehicle also has a comprehensive package of driver assistance systems, including the cornering assistant. This reduces the risk of accidents when turning right and is standard equipment on new vehicles from Universal Transport. In addition to the first CNG truck, the Universal Transport Group has already integrated several electric cars into the company fleet.
