Utility vehicles: First all-electric truck from Volvo Trucks celebrates its premiere

Ismaning, 19.04.2018 - Volvo Trucks presents its first fully electric truck for commercial use: the Volvo FL Electric for urban delivery, waste management and other tasks. Sales and series production of the new model will start next year in Europe.

"We are very proud to present the first in a series of all-electric Volvo trucks ready for regular traffic. With this model, we are enabling cities interested in sustainable urban development to benefit from the advantages of electrified truck transportation," says Claes Nilsson, President of Volvo Trucks.

Thanks to cleaner air and less noise in the city, housing construction and infrastructure measures can be planned more freely than is currently the case. Electrically powered trucks, which do not emit exhaust fumes, are suitable for indoor terminals and low emission zones. Thanks to their low noise level, they can do more work at night and thus reduce the volume of traffic during the day.

"To make the transition safe and smooth, we will offer holistic solutions based on the specific needs of each customer in terms of driving profiles, payloads, availability, range and other parameters. Such solutions can cover many aspects - from route analysis and battery optimization to service and financing. Volvo Trucks works closely with various charging station providers. As always, the goal is to help customers maximize mobility and productivity," says Jonas Odermalm, who is responsible for product strategy for the Volvo FL and Volvo FE at Volvo Trucks.

The Volvo Trucks range is based not least on the Volvo Group's accumulated experience in the field of electrified transportation solutions. The sister company Volvo Buses has sold more than 4,000 electrically powered buses since 2010. The technology for the drive and energy storage of the Volvo FL Electric has been extensively tested from the outset and is supported by Volvo Trucks' extensive sales, service and spare parts network.

"We know from experience how important it is for cities, energy suppliers and vehicle manufacturers to pull together to make electrification a success on a large scale. Attractive incentives, common standards and a long-term strategy for urban planning and the expansion of charging infrastructure can significantly accelerate the process," explains Jonas Odermalm.

Bt Volvo Trucks, it is believed that the electrification of the transport sector must be seen in an overall context so that the ongoing challenges in the field of power generation and battery production, etc. can be met. "For example, to ensure that the raw materials for batteries are extracted responsibly, the Volvo Group works with the 'Drive Sustainably' network, which monitors this aspect. The Volvo Group is also involved in various projects in which batteries from electrically powered commercial vehicles are reused as energy storage. Not all the issues surrounding battery handling have been resolved yet, but we are working both internally and with other stakeholders to drive development and find the necessary solutions," says Jonas Odermalm. red

The first trucks in the Volvo FL Electric series are now being put into service by customers in Gothenburg, the home of Volvo Trucks.
