Cologne tests plug-in hybrids from Ford in city traffic

Together with Ford, the city of Cologne wants to test ten plug-in hybrid vehicles. The project aims to investigate the extent to which hybrid drives can contribute to achieving the city's clean air targets. To this end, ten Ford Transits with plug-in hybrid drives will be used by municipal companies in urban traffic from spring 2019.

The project is being financed by Ford and is scheduled to run for twelve months. The ten plug-in hybrids have an electric drive that is designed for an emission-free range of around 50 kilometers, particularly suitable for emission-free traffic in inner cities. The 1.0-liter EcoBoost three-cylinder petrol engine serves as a range extender and recharges the integrated, liquid-cooled lithium-ion batteries as required. This increases the range of the Ford Transit PHEV to up to 500 kilometers in total. The vehicles are also equipped with telematics and geofencing systems to ensure, for example, that the vehicle drives emission-free in predefined environmental zones.

Henriette Reker, Lord Mayor of the City of Cologne, adds: "Emission-free mobility is a key issue for the future for the rapidly growing city of Cologne. Every research project that works in this direction is a gain."
