Jungheinrich celebrates 50 years of production in Norderstedt
Jungheinrich celebrated the 50th anniversary of its plant in Norderstedt, Schleswig-Holstein, on June 30, 2017. The Hamburg-based intralogistics expert has been producing industrial trucks and warehouse technology for the global market in the Friedrichsgabe district since 1967. Since then, the Group has invested more than 230 million euros in the plant right next to the AKN line towards Kaltenkirchen. Jungheinrich assembles electric pallet trucks, reach trucks and low-lift order pickers here on an area of 214,000 m2. In 2016 alone, 47,380 Jungheinrich trucks rolled off the assembly line in Norderstedt.

Together with the shareholder families, the Board of Management, Supervisory Board and employees, the 50th anniversary of the Jungheinrich plant was celebrated at a large family party. The highlight was the unveiling of the 1 millionth truck by the two daughters of company founder Dr. Friedrich Jungheinrich. "At 50 years old, the Jungheinrich Norderstedt plant is older than the town of Norderstedt itself, which was only founded three years later. From the very beginning, Jungheinrich has focused on strong growth here. The mark of one million trucks produced is proof of the success and importance of our oldest plant outside Hamburg. This development would not have been possible without the great commitment of everyone at the site over the past five decades," emphasizes Hans-Georg Frey, Chairman of the Board of Management of Jungheinrich AG.
With around 1,300 employees, Jungheinrich Norderstedt AG & Co. KG is today one of the largest employers in Schleswig-Holstein. Around 600 young people have been trained in various apprenticeships at Jungheinrich in Norderstedt since 1967. More than half of them are still employed at Jungheinrich today. "The qualification of our employees ensures the quality of our products. For 50 years, Jungheinrich in Norderstedt has relied on sound training as the basis for the professional and personal success of the people who work here," summarizes Nils Sander, Managing Director of Jungheinrich Norderstedt AG & Co.KG.
In addition to the production lines, the factory premises in Norderstedt are now also home to the Jungheinrich Training Center. Modern, well-equipped training rooms and plenty of space for working and learning on trucks and racking from all Jungheinrich lines have been created on an area of almost 8,000 m2. Up to 5,000 participants can qualify here every year. The Jungheinrich research and development center for electromobility and modern lithium-ion batteries is also located in Norderstedt. More than 200 employees work in the "Energy and Drive Systems" division on the economical and environmentally friendly electric drives of the future. Jungheinrich is currently the only manufacturer of material handling equipment that produces its own lithium-ion batteries. The batteries are manufactured at the Norderstedt plant. Due to growing global demand, the Group is planning to significantly expand its production capacity.
