Semi-automated shuttle system
Deep-frozen, compact storage
Virto Group, the Spanish producer of frozen vegetables for industry, retail and gastronomy, has put a new deep-freeze warehouse into operation. It is operated at an ambient temperature of minus 24 degrees Celsius and is equipped with compact storage technology from AR Racking.
The warehouse was built on 4,666 square meters in Sanchonuño, in the province of Segovia northwest of Madrid, and has 10,520 storage spaces for Euro pallets.
Miguel Angel Falces, Managing Director of Ultracongelados del Duero, part of the Virto Group, explains: "It is very important for us to store our food in optimal conditions. The compact system from AR Racking enables us to make the best possible use of the available space and increase the efficiency of our goods flow."
The "AR Shuttle" is used in the new deep-freeze warehouse. This semi-automated racking solution is used for the compacted storage of pallets in channels and is based on the use of motorized conveyor systems, so-called rack trolleys. The remote-controlled trolleys move completely autonomously within the channels, pick up pallets that are delivered manually by forklift truck and store and retrieve them independently. A load unit is placed in the first free position on each level and forwarded until a channel is completely filled. In the retrieval process, the AR-Shuttle transports requested pallets to the edge of the system so that they can be picked up again with the help of industrial trucks.
According to the company, the AR Shuttle system from AR Racking is designed for warehouses with high goods turnover and large volumes per item and, with a thermal load capacity of up to minus 30 degrees Celsius, is particularly well suited to temperature-controlled logistics.
In addition to efficient warehouse compaction and high productivity, the system offers further benefits: according to the manufacturer, for example, it helps to prevent accidents in logistics operations and reduce repair costs, as warehouse employees no longer have to drive forklift trucks through rack aisles, which can lead to collisions. Automated pallet movements and the option of using sensors with counters to take stock of the pallets increase warehouse control.
"We develop a solution for each customer that is tailored to their needs," says Xabier Rica, Commercial Manager and Project Manager at AR Racking, "whether for a wide variety of products or tasks." And Josu Monllor, AR Project Manager, adds: "The AR Shuttle semi-automatic pallet storage system also adapts very well to extreme conditions, in the case of the Virto Group to a demanding deep-freeze environment."
