Project at TFA Dostmann
Fast and service-oriented logistics software
TFA Dostmann, a leading provider of meteorological instruments, has equipped itself for the future with a new warehouse and distribution center. The software plays a key role in this.
Speed and service orientation were at the forefront when TFA Dostmann decided to build a new logistics facility on a greenfield site in Wertheim-Reicholzheim. The facility was commissioned for the first time in 2017 and has been continuously optimized ever since. The core technology is a shuttle system for up to 30,000 storage positions, which is controlled via the KBU-LVS warehouse management system from KBU Logistik AG, Bremen. "We had special requirements for the software," explains Axel Dostmann, owner of TFA Dostmann: "KBU Logistik gave us excellent advice from the outset and provided continuous support during project implementation." The WMS had to fulfill special functions such as exact package calculation, permanent inventory and automatic customer-specific labelling of the goods. Seamless "track and trace" and the preparation of a drop shipment were also included. The intralogistics system had to run smoothly and quickly in order to achieve TFA's goal of "same-day delivery" of an order.
Efficient standards with individual modules
Michael Ahnemann, Sales Manager at KBU Logistik, explains the rational and tailor-made principle: "We have combined our standard modules with individual modules and thus achieved a scalable, breathing structure that adapts to constantly changing requirements today and in the future." The KBU-LVS standard includes multi-client capability, dynamic chaotic warehousing, pick-and-pack picking directly into the shipping container, batch and parts list management and warehouse visualization. The Bremen-based software company has developed an individual algorithm for package calculation. This optimizes the use of storage space during manual carton picking. "We have programmed a 3D visualization that shows the picker the exact fill level of a carton," explains Ahnemann. The package calculation speeds up the picking process and saves packaging material.
Permanent inventory and drop shipment
The permanent inventory software function makes the seasonal business around the turn of the year easier for TFA Dostmann. The Managing Director remembers the double burden on his employees at the end of the calendar and financial year: "When we were still working purely manually, we not only had a hectic day-to-day business, we also had to take care of the manual stocktaking." This problem was solved by using the modern warehouse management system. With the help of KBU Logistik, TFA-Dostmann also wants to implement drop shipment. Until now, the company has only delivered its goods to retailers. As early as 2019, it wants to offer direct delivery to end consumers and thus relieve the logistical and administrative structures of its customers. The current logistics facility is already prepared to handle small orders down to a batch size of one.
