Top 25 system integrators: New top

For the fourth time, materialfluss is exclusively publishing the ranking of the top-selling system integrators. The ranking has a new frontrunner: after Jungheinrich's victories in 2019 and 2020, Jungheinrich has taken the place in the sun for the third time in 2022. Last year's winner Daifuku is in second place, and Dematic is once again strong in third place.

For the fourth time, the editors of materialfluss, the specialist medium for intralogistics and logistics, have exclusively researched the ranking of the top-selling system integrators and intralogistics companies that also act as system integrators.

What and why: How the ranking came about, a look at the participating companies

This time, 40 companies were asked to submit their turnover, EBIT and employee figures. The respondents were companies that are relevant or active on the European market. In the case of intralogistics companies that have other business areas in addition to system integration, such as Jungheinrich AG, the editors were in some cases provided with the Group's total turnover. This is noted in the table in order to be able to classify the figures correctly. You can download the table at the end of the article. This resulted in a "Top 29" this year. Eleven companies did not want to communicate their turnover figures or did not respond to the editorial team's request (you can find out more at the end of the article).

29 are in: two new players and a returnee from Achern

Logically, the current ranking mainly includes the companies that were also included in the last three years. The companies IGZ and SITLog are new on board, while Kasto Maschinenbau from Achern is back after a voluntary break. At SSI Schäfer (3rd place), the scope of consolidation has changed compared to the previous year and the 2020 figures have been adjusted by the company to improve comparability. The situation is slightly different for fifth-placed MHS: after Fortna took over the mechanical engineering company in 2022, the turnover of MHS and Fortna was added together for the 2021 turnover figures in this ranking.

The podium: Jungheinrich at the top, Dematic grows enormously

Jungheinrich returns to the top of the materialfluss Top 25 system integrators ranking, keeping second-placed Daifuku at bay thanks to double-digit sales growth. "Between the boom and the crisis, 2021 was the most successful financial year in the company's history in terms of figures. We started the year with the ambition to grow profitably even during the pandemic. We succeeded," commented Jungheinrich's CEO Lars Brzoska. Dematic, which has been in third place for the longest time, recorded excellent sales growth of 44.5 percent and can set its sights on second place if the pandemic continues. You can find the statement from Dematic and many other system integrators in our picture gallery.

Vanderlande came in fourth place, moving up one place. Fortna shows how a merger can suddenly create a top intralogistics company and comes in fifth place with a combined turnover of 1.9 billion euros. The SSI Schaefer Group climbed from fourth to sixth place.

The ups and downs: who made up places - and who didn't

Let's take a look at the relative changes in the top 25. Witron has made it into the top 10 following sales growth of almost 50 percent; the company from the Upper Palatinate has been doing very well for several years now.

The business performance of system integrators varied in 2021, but was almost uniformly positive. At the top of the snapshot is the Inther Group, whose turnover fell by double digits in 2020 and has now grown by 169.5%. SITLog and Element Logic also recorded triple-digit growth. © WBM

Knapp recorded the highest sales growth in the top 10 (up 57.2 percent), consolidating eighth place. The "victim" of the development in 2021 is TGW, with the Austrian company falling out of the top 10 and landing in 11th place. Between 10th and 20th place, the spotlight is clearly turning towards Element Logic: the system integrator is benefiting from numerous large projects and the current extraordinarily high demand for AutoStore systems. As a result, the company has improved from 21st to 15th place following impressive sales growth of 115 percent. By the way, it gets even better - you can find an overview of the ten companies that grew the most in the turbulent year 2021 in the picture above.

A look at the top 10: The billion-dollar game is almost complete

The trend from 2020(see also materialfluss WELT DER INTRALOGISTIK 2021) continues: the turnover that a company must achieve to join the exclusive club of the top 10 is approaching the one billion euro mark. Only the Beumer Group is below this in 10th place with 950 million euros, after which the "club of billionaires" begins. In total, the ten best-placed companies reported a turnover of around 23.7 billion euros to the editors of materialfluss, compared to 19.9 billion euros in 2020.

Ranks 11 to 20 still have a total turnover of around 3.6 billion euros, with a larger gap in turnover - around 450 million euros - between 13th place (Fives Smart Automation Solutions) and 14th place (System Logistics). The increasingly present market concentration is even more striking when looking at the top 5, which account for a total of 16.3 of the 23.7 billion euro turnover of the top 10.

The nation ranking: German is still spoken at the headquarters of system integrators

Where are the major system integrators that materialfluss presents in its ranking located? Once again, the dominance of system integrators from Germany, Austria and Switzerland is striking. They once again take 21 of the 29 places in the ranking. The fact that these are not just small companies is shown by adding up the turnover of the ten largest companies in the three countries (15.6 billion euros). Germany leads the three-country battle with 14 companies, followed by Switzerland (4) and Austria (3).

23.3 billion euros: A look at total sales and the total number of employees

Finally, there is a look at the total turnover: the 29 system integrators represented in the ranking generated a combined turnover of just under 28 billion euros in 2021 (2020: 23.3 billion euros) and employ at least 87,527 people; Daifuku did not report the number of employees this time. The situation is largely uniform in terms of turnover: only two companies in the ranking recorded lower turnover in 2021 than in 2020, ranging from plus 169.5 percent (Inther Group) to minus 26.3 percent (Unitechnik).

At the end of this interpretation of selected business figures, however, it should not be forgotten that we are in the project business here with the system integrators. Larger individual projects that were invoiced in 2021 have a significant impact here - or are only included in the accounts in a later financial year. Nevertheless, trends can be identified in the long term.

Regrettable: Companies that belong in the ranking but are still missing

We do not want to withhold the system integrators who once again refused to provide sales figures when asked by the editorial team: These are the companies AM Logistics, BSS Bohnenberg, H+H, Klinkhammer, Körber Logistics, psb intralogistics, Remmert and Servus/Heron. The companies Köhl Maschinenbau and Stopa did not respond to the editorial team's inquiries.

The reasons for this decision against comparability could not be ascertained and so we leave it to the readers to form their own opinion. The fifth update of the ranking will be published in December 2023. Martin Schrüfer
