New material for pallet packaging

Packaging specialist Smurfit Westrock has developed a 100% paper-based alternative to the polyethylene stretch film commonly used to stabilize pallet loads during transport.

The solution is made from Nertop Stretch Kraft paper, which is fully recyclable. Its properties also include high energy absorption and strong performance in humid conditions. The pallet wrap is the latest addition to Smurfit Westrock's Better Planet Packaging portfolio, which aims to reduce the environmental impact of packaging.

Award from leading UK glass supplier

Encirc, a leading glass supplier from the UK that produces over three billion containers a year, was the first company there to use the new paper packaging. The company named Smurfit Westrock a Sustainability Champion at its Partner Day in September to recognize the progress that the use of paper packaging represents.

Commitment to the circular economy

Jemma Jones, National Account Manager at Smurfit Westrock: "Like Smurfit Westrock, Encirc is committed to the circular economy and immediately recognized the significant CO2 reduction potential of paper packaging. Traditional stretch film is still the first choice for many companies, but our paper-based alternative performs just as well and is much easier to recycle at the end of its useful life."
