Nearshoring study: Production moves closer to industrialized countries

Frankfurt, 09.07. 2017 - The ever-increasing demands of customers for products and services in today's globalized business world are giving rise to a new trend: nearshoring.

Companies from industrialized countries are once again producing more close to their sales markets instead of relocating production further afield. 51% of the companies participating in the international Miebach study are already using the relocation of production to neighboring countries close to their sales markets as a location strategy. This surprisingly high proportion will continue to rise, as 26% of participants see nearshoring as a future trend to a high or even very high degree. In Europe in particular, nearshoring will become significantly more important, while in North America, onshoring, i.e. production in one's own country, is expected to increase. On the other hand, relocation to more distant foreign countries remains interesting in Asia.

"Modern production methods enable a stronger customer focus and provide a competitive advantage if the location strategy is right. Nearshoring and onshoring are becoming increasingly important for companies. The population of large economic regions in particular can benefit from an increase in jobs through production close to the sales market." - Bernd Müller-Dauppert, Member of the Management Board, Miebach Consulting GmbH.

However, the trend towards nearshoring and onshoring also has an impact on the supply chain: according to the study participants, it is becoming more complex. An integrated view of supply chain and production networks is therefore required for an optimal X-shoring strategy and the resulting location decision. A total of 127 companies from various sectors took part in the survey. One third of the study participants came from America and two thirds from Europe.

The results report of the international nearshoring study (available in German and English) can be requestedfrom Miebach Consulting, Ralf Hoffmann([email protected]). In addition to the international study, Miebach Consulting also conducted the survey in the DACH region. The results report of the nearshoring study specifically for the DACH region can also be requested free of charge. red
