Largest container ship in the world reaches Bremerhaven

The "MSC Gülsün", currently the largest container ship in the world, called at the MSC Gate Terminal in Bremerhaven for the first time on August 19. With a length of 399.9 meters, a width of 61.55 meters, a draught of up to 16.5 meters and a transport capacity of over 23,000 standard containers (TEU), the "MSC Gülsün" is the current record holder among container ships.

The ship was commissioned on July 4 after a construction period of around three years by the client Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) and put into regular service (Silk Service) between Asia and Europe. It is the first of a total of eleven ships in the so-called MSC Megamax 24 class that MSC has ordered from two Korean shipyards. The sister ship "MSC MINA" is also already on her maiden voyage from East Asia to Europe. It too will call at Bremerhaven, probably on September 9.

"Next step in ship size development"

Friedrich Stuhrmann, Managing Director of MSC Gate, said on the occasion of the first call: "The dimensions of this new class of ship are impressive and represent the next step in the development of ship size. Being able to accompany the maiden voyage of such a giant as an integral part of its schedule is very exciting for everyone involved. Of course, we have prepared ourselves well for the arrival of the "MSC Gülsün" and will serve the ship in the usual quality. MSC Gate is already being called at several times a week by ships of the MSC Pegasus class and the Maersk Triple-E class, thus proving its efficiency on a weekly basis. We are also in a position to handle this new class of ship."
