Rhenus nominated for Heavy Lift Award
Rhenus in Rotterdam has been recognized for its commitment to promoting sustainable technologies and has been nominated for this year's Heavy Lift Award in the sustainability category. The latest Rhenus project at the Rotterdam site is the purchase of the first fully electric mobile port crane in the Netherlands.
The prize will be awarded virtually on October 7, 2020. Rhenus is investing more in sustainable technologies. These investments also included the purchase of the first fully electric mobile port crane in the Netherlands for the Rhenus Deep Sea Terminal on the Maasvlakte. "The fully electric crane achieves greater energy efficiency and enables us to push ahead with our electrification targets in Rotterdam," explains Peter van der Steen, Managing Director of Rhenus in Rotterdam. The new crane on the Maasvlakte can lift up to 125,000 kilos. The 690-volt external power supply lowers the operating costs and also reduces noise and exhaust emissions. The crane was connected to the port's power supply at the beginning of September.
Another sustainability project that has already been implemented is the equipping of both terminals and part of the 91,000 square meters of warehouse space with LED lighting. This has reduced carbon dioxide emissions and at the same time increased the safety of terminal employees thanks to better lighting. The annual energy saving is equivalent to the average consumption of 13 households.
In 2021, four new electric vehicles are to be added to the Rhenus vehicle fleet in Rotterdam and additional charging stations will be installed at the terminals. All small forklift trucks in the port of Rotterdam will also be replaced by electrically powered vehicles.
